Stump Grinding vs. Stump Removal: What’s the Difference?

When homeowners ask us to “get rid of a stump,” they sometimes assume there’s only one way to do it. There are actually two — and each has its own pros, cons, and price tag.

What Is Stump Grinding?

Stump grinding uses a powered cutting wheel to chip the stump down into small wood chips, typically four to six inches below ground level. The roots stay in the soil and decompose naturally over the next few years. The hole is filled with the resulting mulch or topsoil.

  • Pros: Faster, cheaper, less disruptive to your lawn, and the leftover wood chips can be reused as mulch.
  • Cons: Roots remain underground, which is a problem if you plan to plant a new tree in the exact same spot.

What Is Stump Removal?

Stump removal pulls the entire stump and root ball out of the ground, usually with heavy equipment like an excavator. You’re left with a large hole that needs to be filled and re-landscaped.

  • Pros: Complete removal, including roots — ideal if you’re building, putting in a pool, or replanting in the same spot.
  • Cons: More expensive, more disruptive, and your lawn takes longer to recover.

Which Should You Choose?

For most Edmonton homeowners, stump grinding is the better-value option. It’s quicker, less invasive, and gets the visible stump out of the way without tearing up the yard. We typically recommend full removal only when the roots will interfere with new construction or replanting.

Rule of thumb: If you’re not replanting or building on the exact spot, grinding is almost always the right call.
