Seasonal Tree Care Tips for Edmonton Homeowners
Edmonton’s climate is hard on trees. The good news is that most tree problems are preventable with a little seasonal attention.

Spring
Walk your yard once the snow is gone and look for winter damage — broken branches, splits in the bark, or signs of rodent gnawing at the trunk. Light pruning of dead or damaged limbs is best done before bud break. Apply a layer of mulch around the base of each tree (but not touching the trunk) to retain moisture as the soil warms.
Spring tip: Keep mulch a few inches away from the trunk — piling it against the bark traps moisture and invites rot.
Summer
Edmonton summers swing between hot and dry, especially in July and August. Deep-water young trees once a week — a slow trickle for 30 minutes is far better than a quick splash. Watch for signs of pests: chewed leaves, sticky residue, or unusual leaf drop. Catching issues early keeps them small.
A slow trickle for 30 minutes beats a quick splash every time.
Fall
Fall is the best season for major pruning on most species. Rake fallen leaves, especially from any tree that had disease or fungal issues during the year. Give your trees a deep watering before freeze-up to help them survive winter dehydration. Wrap young or thin-barked trees to protect against sunscald and rodent damage.
Winter
Knock heavy snow off branches gently with a broom — never shake a frozen branch, as it can snap. After heavy snowfalls or wind events, do a quick visual check for hanging limbs or broken branches that could fall on the house, garage, or vehicles. Removing hazardous limbs in winter is often easier and cheaper than waiting for spring.
Winter warning: Frozen wood is brittle. If a branch is iced or frozen solid, leave it alone until conditions warm up.
